This is the essay that I wrote for my renaissance project

posted 2 years ago

Leonardo was a great inventor, but also a scientist, an engineer, and a painter. For this reason he is one of the most famous of his time. da Vinci was an inventor, he made many modes of transportation, he made: The armored car which is a primitive tank which would have a turret and light cannons. He also made the Submarine which could go underwater. He later made sketches for flying machines.
Boats, and gondolas were the two main vehicles that were available for sea traveling in the Renaissance. However, Leonardo da Vinci would make future underwater travel possible by inventing the submarine. The submarine was never made, this was due to the fact that the technology available in the renaissance was limited to a small amount.

Gondolas were mainly used in Venice. Small canals were used instead of roads, and one could navigate them in a small gondola. Gondolas were flat-bottomed and could travel at a slow to medium pace. They were not made to go out to sea. Gondolas were propelled by man and did not have sails.
Larger boats were also available during the Renaissance. These boats were used for fishing, traveling, shipping items, etc. Boats came in different shapes and sizes. Some boats, like a fishing ship, would be rather small. Some other boats, like passenger boats, were huge and could carry many people. Boats could also be used for war. War Boats had light cannons and could shoot each other down. There were some boats that could be used for exploring exploration boats varied in size they could be huge or really small. Boats in the Renaissance were propelled by sails or by man.
The submarine was invented by da Vinci, but was not built or tested. In 1499 Leonardo started to study a greater amount of engineering. He studied boats water and machines. These studies led him to design something so advanced that it could go underwater – the submarine. da Vinci’s idea for a submarine was great in concept, but would it actually work? Some people think that it would work fine while other people think that his design would sink. I think that it would sink because the materials that he planned to make it with were primitive.

Traveling by land was possible during the renaissance it was much harder though. During the renaissance there were no cars, the only way to travel was by walking or by horse-back riding, (other ways of traveling by land were possible during the renaissance but involved horses as well.) da Vinci didn’t invent the wheel, but he did invent the next best thing and that is the first model of the every-day car. His invention was called the armored car. The armored car had wheels not on the sides, but directly under the car. The armored car was also equipped with light cannons, a turret, and of-course… armor.
The first car needed the first ever breaking system, so thinking of this da Vinci made the first hand-break. Although this hand-break was never tested, the hand-break should have the stopping power to stop this huge, slow car. The car was never made to achieve great speeds, the car actually, was made to be slower than a human. T
