Speed skiing.
posted 2 years agoSpeed skiing is not currently a Olympic sport. It will not be at 2010 Olympics, however, this sport has been in the olympics in the past. The sport was banned due to the danger involved. The speeds that you can reach are incredible, people have been able to reach 156 Mph! There are no turns involved in the sport just a strait path that leads you down the mountain. Speed skiing is one of the, if not, the fastest sport that involves no machines whatsoever. Even pro’s get freaked out when they pass the 130 mph mark.
The suits that speed skiers wear are not made out of metal they are actually made out of latex and can survive very high speeds, the suit is also made out of latex so that if the skier falls he can easily slide without any major injuries (Most of the time.) Speed skiers also wear a helmet, and as if one latex suit wasn’t enough, they put a second, thicker one over the first one. The helmets are huge and covers not only their head, but their neck too.
Here are the high speed records:
Men: 251 km/h and was achieved by an Italian man named Simone Origone
Disabled men: 213 km/h and was achieved by a man from Kenya named John Guilmartin
Women: 242 km/h and was achieved by a Swedish woman named Sanna Tidstrand
ON A BIKE: 222 km/h and was achieved by a French man who likes to beat world records on BIKES named Les Arcs
It seems like a great sport but it won’t be on the olympics for a long time. The sport has a slim shot to make it on the 2022 Olympics.
